Hey guys, I was hoping to get some help analyzing a practice ARA unlimited target I shot. I am worried that possibly my tune might be off. I ended up with a 2050 with 13x but the majority of my 50s dropped low. The wind was about 3 mph usually from 4 or 8 o'clock which led to some holds just barely left and right of center but I ended up always trending low. I'm kinda kicking myself now for not dialing a click up on elevation which I think would have saved me from some 50s but I still would have the vertical dispersion I am seeing. Overall, I think Im gonna trying adjusting the tuner a bit in each direction to see if I can prevent the lower shots but just wanted some opinions from others who are more experienced. Thanks.

A classic case of not centering your 25 shot group on the bull. You could move every shot up a half a bullet and not lose any 100's high and gain a bunch of low 50's into 100's. A perfect tune cannot fix mental mistakes.
Thank you for the feedback. Yea, thats what I was thinking. In the moment when concentrating, I didn't even notice or think about it.

You can take a ruler, draw a horizontal line across the dots across the rows, and see how many shots are centered on the line, how many below, how many above. You'll see more below as John mentioned. An example is the second row from the top. 4/5 shots are below the dot. Bottom row, 3 of 5 are below the dot.

Also, depending on where your point of aim was, you can also not adjust the scope, but hold off so you are higher in the ring than where you were aiming while shooting the card. Another way to skin the cat, so to speak...

That would have been a 249-250 16X IR target.

It basically looks like mediocre ammo to me, As noted above, change your hold off, to keep them from leaking out the bottom. Meanwhile, keep buying ammo and test, test, test.

Larry,

John hit the nail smack on the head! Move the POA up by 50 thou and the target would have been a 2400! Nice shooting!!

I have all of the various PDF's and CSV files on the target. If you want them, PM me with your email address and I'll send them along.

Tony

I mentally looked at this and thought it might make 2400. If ever there was a LESSON in shooting 22lr BR this is it. No ammo chase, no tuner twisting, no SAP vs PAS, no Shillen vs Muller, just go from chump to champ by holding in the right spot.

John,

indeed. I think this also shows that the ammo is pretty good. I use OnTarget to look at every target I shoot ( when I remember to take home from a match, that is). Mean radius is also a very important number.

My opinion on ammo testing g has changed dramatically over the last couple of years. A lot of the change was driven from talking to you about it. Shoot 5 or ten to get things warmed up; shoot the target; and let OnTarget show you the picture. This is assuming, of course, that you believe you have a decent tune. I’d say that Larry looks like he might have a good one.

Why On Target?
with the 100’s of targets I’ve shot, I don’t think I ever shot one where I held the exact same spot for 25 shots. What am I missing here?

Excellent analysis, gentlemen. I believe you may have just cured some of my poor ARA performance. Thank you very much.
